Technical notes on cyclobutano cucurbiturils
The cyclobutano-fused series (CyB5CB[5], CyB6CB[6]) is distinguished by good solubility in both water and alcohols. Compared with water-only systems, these materials are easier to use in water/alcohol mixtures, coating formulations, composite processes needing an organic co-solvent, and certain chromatographic and materials-processing workflows. The rigid cavity and carbonyl portals are unchanged, so recognition behaviour remains comparable to the parent homologues — useful whenever the host must stay dissolved in mixed media.
Storage, Solubility and Handling Notes
- Store sealed, dry and protected from light at room temperature; for long-term storage keep at 2–8 °C under dry conditions.
- Cucurbituril powders are somewhat hygroscopic — reseal promptly after use and record the batch number and opening date.
- Solubility tips: CB[7] and the modified series dissolve directly in water; for CB[6], dissolve first in formic acid or DMSO, then dilute into the target solvent system.
- Filter stock host solutions and use them freshly prepared; for binding experiments record buffer composition, ionic strength and pH.
